CAMBRIDGE, MA (April 26, 2008) - The Harvard Association for US China Relations (HAUSCR) is pleased to announce the third annual Harvard College AUSCR Summit for Young Leaders in China (HSYLC), to be held at the Shanghai Eastern Caoyang Foreign Languages High School from August 16-24.
HSYLC 2008 (hsylc.org) will bring together approximately 300 outstanding Chinese high school students in an intimate environment designed to expose students to new ideas, to cultivate their leadership skills, and to promote cultural exchange. During this time conference participants will work with Harvard Assistant Professor and Senior Lecturer on International Health at the Harvard School of Public Health and Founding Director of China Initiative Harvard School of Public Health, Yuanli Liu, as well as students and prominent business leaders from China. Some of HSYLC 2008’s highlights include the Seminar Program, the ATVenture Program, the Distinguished Speaker Series, and the Panel on Entrepreneurship.
Inspired by Harvard College’s own Freshmen Seminar Program, the HSYLC 2008 Seminar Program will feature 35 seminars on a broad selection of topics - from sustainable development, and consumerism, to social psychology and finance - each led by a passionate Harvard student. Students will also be exposed to the knowledge and wisdom of prominent leaders in a variety of fields and inspire them with models of success as a part of the Distinguished Speakers Series.
HSLYC 2008 will feature the second annual ATVenture Program, which encourages teams to craft their own solutions to societal issues most relevant to them. Teams will present their ideas at the ATVenture Symposium at the end the Summit, and the winning proposals will receive funding and other support from HAUSCR so that they can be realized in the year following HSYLC 2008.
HAUSCR is also pleased to present the first Panel on Entrepreneurship, which will bridge the Distinguished Speakers Series and the ATVenture Program. The panelists from social and business backgrounds will discuss the attributes they have found key to their successes as entrepreneurs. Following their presentations and a Q&A session, panelists will serve as executive judges for the ATVenture Symposium.
Students will also improve communication and critical thinking skills through the Writing Program taught by Seminar Leaders daily. This year’s program will feature three tracks: expository essay, personal essay, and journalism.
Finally, a variety of seminar leader-led activities are planned for the high school students, including a journalism program, sports matches, and a talent show.
The Association (Harvard College AUSCR) was founded with the purpose of facilitating the interchange of ideas and opportunities between Harvard College students and their Chinese peers and is the parent organization of HSYLC. HSYLC is the only education and leadership conference of its kind in China. HSYLC seeks to make a lasting impact on its student participants by exposing students to a cross-cultural liberal arts education that helps develop abilities and skills for success. The Summit targets students’ critical thinking capabilities as well as their creativity and engagement. Upon successful completion of HSYLC, conference participants join the HSYLC alumni network where members have access to unparalleled academic and career opportunities.
